My Family History -

Jeremiah

In 1841, my great-great-grandparents Benjamin and Margaret Jeremiah were living at River Row, Treforest, Glamorgan. They were both recorded as being 20 years old on the census of that year. However, these ages are likely to have been inaccurate as, in this census, adult ages were rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5.

Benjamin was born outside the county of Glamorgan while Margaret and their 2-year-old daughter, Jane, were both born in Glamorgan. The occupation of Benjamin was given as woodman. Also living in the household was Ezekiel Jeremiah, a shoemaker, whose age was recorded as 50. Like Benjamin, he was born outside Glamorgan.

At this time, another woodman with the surname Jeremiah lived in River Row a few doors away from Benjamin and Margaret. His name was William Jeremiah and his age was recorded as 40. In his household were Ann Jeremiah, 45, William Jeremiah, 12, Daniel Jeremiah, 14 and John Jeremiah, 10. All in the household were born outside Glamorgan.

By the time of the 1851 census, my great-great-grandmother, Margaret Jeremiah (nee Evans), was a widow and she was living with her children in Taff Street, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. In this census, her age was recorded as 38 and her birthplace as Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan. Daughter Jane was 12 and her birthplace was given as Llantwit Fardre. Margaret's three sons were born in the parish of Llanwonno. They were Benjamin, aged 8, Jenkin, aged 6 and 3-year-old Morgan.
