Stephen Lewis
In 1881, my great-grandparents, Stephen Lewis and Mary Davies, were servants on a farm at Cwmllwyfog in the parish of Devynock, Brecknock, Wales. Their employer was a blind farmer, 49-year-old John M. Davies who farmed 109 acres, employing three men.

Stephen Lewis was an 18-year-old indoor farm servant who was born in Devynock while Mary Davies, born in Llancrwys, Carmarthenshire, was 19 and a general domestic servant. Both were unmarried at this time. Also in the farmer's household was another indoor farm servant, Morgan Davies,  aged 40 and married. He was born in Llancrwys, too, so he may have been Mary's father and consequently my great-great-grandfather.

Stephen Lewis and Mary Davies were married on 22nd. March 1884 at the Register Office in Brecknock. Both were 21 years of age. On their marriage certificate, Stephen was described as a farmer's son residing at Tycoch, Maescar while Mary was living at Ynisclydach at the time of the marriage. Stephen's father's name was recorded as John Lewis and Mary's father as Morgan Davies. Neither father was witness to the marriage, the witnesses being Henry J. Ind and H.G. Peirce.
